Description
Title: Biotechnological Interventions for the Production of Ginsenosides
Abstract: Ginsenosides are secondary metabolites that are classified as either saponins or triterpenoids. These hold a distinctive position in the pharmaceutical industry, connected to the production of pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements. These beneficial secondary metabolites are primarily used to treat cardiac and nervous conditions. The development of various biotechnological approaches, which would streamline the production and extraction process, has been made possible by the conventional approaches for ginsenoside extraction being time-consuming and impractical. This review outlines the biotechnological methods that have been primarily used to increase ginsenoside production, including conventional tissue culture, cell suspension culture, protoplast culture, polyploidy, in vitro mutagenesis, and hairy root culture. Also presented is the use of bioreactors to scale up ginsenoside yield. The primary goal of this review is to discuss the unexplored aspects and limitations of these biotechnological tools in order to create a platform for the use of novel strategies in the near future to further increase ginsenoside production.
