Title: What variables might affect the global and Polish epidemiology of tuberculosis?
Abstract: The review of factors affecting the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis in Poland and around the world is presented by the authors. There were groups of people at higher risk for tuberculosis as well as clinical conditions like HIV, uremia, diabetes mellitus, organ transplantation, treatment with glucocorticosteroids, and having antibodies to TNF and its receptors that predispose to activating latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). It was emphasized that elderly people had a higher prevalence of tuberculosis and a worse prognosis. Recent recommendations for LTBI recognition were presented, with special attention paid to patients who are immunosuppressed. Experts from the WHO also presented treatment strategies to stop LTBI activation. All information was discussed in light of Poland’s current tuberculosis epidemiological situation.
