Description
Title: Recombinant collagen research over the past three decades: reinventing the wheel or creating new biomedical products?
Abstract: The building blocks for various tissues and organs are collagens. Additionally, these proteins function as signaling molecules that regulate cell behavior during the growth, development, and repair of organs. Collagens are an appealing substance in biomedicine, the drug and food industries, and cosmetic products due to their long half-life, mechanical strength, capacity to assemble into fibrils and networks, biocompatibility, and abundance from readily available discarded animal tissues. Recombinant human collagens were first expressed about 30 years ago as a result of ground-breaking research, which sparked research into the possibility of using these proteins in place of collagens derived from animals. Since then, scientists have used a variety of systems to create recombinant collagens and their fragments that are native-like. These collagens were also put to the test as materials for therapeutic use, drug delivery, and tissue repair. Although numerous studies showed that recombinant collagens perform just as well as their native counterparts, the biomedical, pharmaceutical, or food industries have not yet embraced the recombinant collagen technology. This essay emphasizes It considers the prospects and limitations of recent recombinant collagen production and use technologies.
