Description

Title: Youth Inactivity in Sub-Saharan Africa: Does Opportunity Inequality Matter?

Abstract: In six countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, the current study aims to determine how gender, age, place of residence, parent background in terms of educational attainment and occupation, and parent occupation determine the likelihood that young people will not be employed. We make use of information from the ILO’s school-to-work transition surveys from 2014 and 2015. We begin by calculating an updated version of the World Bank’s Human Opportunity Index for each nation. The contribution of each factor to that index is then calculated. The findings indicate that while dissimilarity has a significant impact in Madagascar, as well as to a lesser extent in Malawi and Uganda, Liberia continues to face significant difficulties in integrating young people into the labor force.

Keywords: youth; inequality of opportunity; employment; dissimilarity
