Abstract: In many writing centres, documenting the actions during a tutoring session is normal practice. Tutors commonly create “session notes,” which may be a very useful tool for tutors’ daily support work. However, there is a dearth of research on utilizing session notes to evaluate a teacher’s development and improvement over time. Instead of the language details included within the session notes, research mostly focuses on how varied audiences interact with them. This study closes a gap in the literature by analyzing both the conceptual and practical applications of session notes. The researchers conducted a longitudinal discourse analysis of the 1,261 session notes obtained over six semesters after the installation of semesterly training modules for instructors. Twelve factors, including semantic, behavioural, and emotional comments on the work completed in the writing centre, were coded for in the session nets. This study helped us to understand how tutors identify their tutoring practice and demonstrate their tutoring skills. For example, tutors fill out forms to show off their knowledge. The results show that a semester of experience influences tutors so that they begin to adhere to note-taking techniques. On the other hand, certain training can change the way seasoned teachers behave.
