Title: What other breathing techniques are there for kyphoscoliosis besides NIV?
Abstract: A significant clinical issue, kyphoscoliosis (KS) lacks specific management recommendations, particularly when it comes to respiratory pathology. There has not yet been a thorough systematic review conducted. The objective was to conduct a thorough analysis of the information available on the pathophysiology and management of kyphoscoliosis. A PRISMA-compliant electronic systematic search was carried out using preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). Examining the Pubmed database, the search was extended to include the date November 10, 2016. 52 full text articles were evaluated for eligibility after 188 articles in total were screened. Only 28 articles were examined further because 24 of them met the exclusion criteria. Between 1959 and 2015, these articles—25 of which were original studies and one of which was a randomized control trial—were published in 18 journals. 18 prospective studies, 7 retrospective studies, and 3 case reports made up the entire corpus. The clinical problem of KS is significant, complex, and multidisciplinary. Unambiguous conclusions cannot be drawn because the majority of published studies are heterogeneous. Despite significant advancements in our understanding of the pathology and functioning of the respiratory system in KS, the current course of treatment does not seem to be entirely effective. Large prospective studies and unified clinical guidelines on the management of this patient group are therefore urgently needed.
