Title: Vitamin D’s pleiotropic effects in cystic fibrosis

Abstract: The most prevalent recessively autosomally inherited disease in Caucasians is cystic fibrosis (CF). It is a multi-systemic, terminal illness with an incurable prognosis. Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator, which results from the CFTR gene mutation, causes the disease (CFTR). Patients with CF are susceptible to a lack of fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin D. It has to do with reduced sun exposure (caused by taking antibiotics that cause photophobia), decreased adipose tissue, and insufficient food supply. Fat malabsorption is related to this. The discovery of vitamin D receptor (VDR) presence outside of the skeletal system allowed researchers to draw the conclusion that vitamin D affects a variety of physiological processes, including immune function, respiratory health, intestinal microflora, and the course of cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD). According to research, vitamin D may be crucial in preventing diseases that coexist with cystic fibrosis. The right amount of vitamin D helps to keep the lungs healthy and guards against reoccurring pulmonary infections. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that having normal vitamin D levels may help to increase the likelihood that lung transplant surgery will be successful. Given the broad range of vitamin D effects, it is advised to keep serum concentrations in CF patients above the recommended level. In conclusion, due to its pleiotropic effect, vitamin D levels in CF patients must be maintained at the proper levels. It can be done by regularly checking vitamin D levels and giving each patient a customized supplement dose.
