Title: Utilizing genome editing technology to improve fruits and vegetables genetically to reduce post-harvest loss
Abstract: Worldwide challenges to food security and crop production include overpopulation, changing environmental conditions, crop establishment problems, and various post-harvest losses. The demand for premium foods with enhanced nutritional value is also increasing daily. Therefore, it is crucial to produce high-quality produce as well as to minimize post-harvest losses of produce, especially of perishable fruits and vegetables. Improvements to horticultural crops’ post-harvest quality traits have been sought after for many years. Recently, a new strategy to effectively and efficiently manage and combat post-harvest has emerged, using modern genetic tools like genome editing. Numerous horticultural crops can successfully introduce mutations (In Dels) using the various genome editing tools, such as ZFNs, TALENs, and the CRISPR/Cas9 system, to address and solve the problems related to post-harvest storage quality. Here, we give a thorough overview of genome editing strategies used in horticulture crops to enhance post-harvest stability traits like shelf life, texture, and pathogen resistance without sacrificing nutritional value. Also covered are significant impediments, difficulties, and potential solutions for using genome editing tools.
