Abstract: Scientists have been interested in collagen for more than 50 years because it is the most prevalent protein in mammals. Because of its pervasiveness in all body tissues and excellent biocompatibility, scientists have successfully investigated its potential as a biomaterial for a wide range of biomedical applications. This research has received widespread clinical approval. Collagen hydrogels have frequently been co-polymerized with other substances in recent years to increase their adaptability and applicability. both natural and artificial polymers. The use of bioactive glycosaminoglycans, the ECM’s carbohydrate-rich polymers in charge of controlling tissue homeostasis and cell signaling, is particularly significant. This review discusses the most recent developments in the creation of collagen-based hydrogels and hydrogels containing a collagen-glycosaminoglycan blend for biomedical research. We go over the formulations, drawbacks of using collagen alone, and benefits of adding glycosaminoglycans. in the hydrogels (GAGs). We go into more detail about the modifications made to these biopolymers for tunability and talk about applications for particular tissues. The data presented here will show how versatile and highly valuable it is to use hydrogels made of collagen and GAGs in biomedical engineering applications.
