Title: Using Hydrogenic Spectral Lines for Langmuir Solitons in Plasma Diagnosis Using Hydrogenic Spectral Lines for Langmuir Solitons in Plasma Diagnosis

Abstract: Over 50 years have passed since the creation of various spectroscopic diagnostics for the relatively weak Langmuir waves in plasmas and their successful application. There have only been a very small number of theoretical papers on spectroscopic diagnostics of Langmuir solitons (i.e., relatively strong Langmuir waves) in plasmas. The most promising result to date was based on the use of satellites of the He, Li, or He-like and Li-like ion spectral lines, which are forbidden by dipoles. It was demonstrated that, compared to the case of non-solitonic Langmuir waves, the peak intensity of the satellites of the dipole-forbidden lines can be significantly increased—by orders of magnitude. Satellites under Langmuir solitons can be distinguished from non-solitonic Langmuir waves thanks to this distinguishing characteristic. The effects of Langmuir solitons on various spectral lines of hydrogen or hydrogen-like ions are studied generally in the current paper. We then compare the key characteristics of the profiles for the Langmuir solitons with the case of the non-solitonic Langmuir waves of the same amplitude using the Ly-beta line as an example. We also demonstrate how the Langmuir solitons’ amplitude and their distance from one another within the sequence of solitons affect the line profiles.
