Title: Understanding Rice’s Salinity Tolerance Through a Multi-Omics and Integrative Approach: A Review
Abstract: Environmental stressors, most notably salinity stress, are simultaneously encountered by rice plants (Oryza sativa L.). The main obstacle that can adversely affect growth and crop yield is salinity. Future food security would be ensured by an understanding of the salt stress and its complex trait mechanisms for improving salt tolerance in rice plants. Insights and effects of molecular-physiological responses, biochemical changes, and plant hormonal signal transduction pathways in rice under saline stress are the main goals of this review. The review also highlights a recent development in computational biology and multi-omics that has led to the identification of candidate genes and transcription factors that are responsive to saline stress (TFs). The review also summarizes the agricultural practices, breeding, genetic engineering, and biotechnological tools that can be used to identify the opportunities and bottlenecks for improving salt tolerance and creating salinity-tolerant rice varieties. Future research will focus on the development of strong tools to analyze novel salinity stress-related players, reveal in-depth mechanisms and ways to incorporate the existing literature, and shed more light on salinity responsive transduction pathways in plants. In particular, by advancing knowledge that focuses on molecular aspects, this review reveals the complete picture of salinity stress tolerance in rice.
