Title: Uncovering Emerging SARS-CoV-2 Variants, Vaccines, and Therapeutic Approaches in COVID-19
Abstract: The etiological agent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has been a major concern for human health worldwide, is the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The emergence of several SARS-CoV-2 variants, including B.1.1.7 (Alpha), B.1.351 (Beta), P1 (Gamma), and B.1.617.2 (Delta), which exhibit increased transmissibility and resistance to vaccines and treatments, has made it more difficult to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Importantly, there is strong evidence that people with comorbidities and dysregulated immune responses are more vulnerable to contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Here, we present a thorough viewpoint on the SARS-CoV-2 infection vulnerability in patients with underlying medical comorbidities. We discuss ongoing preventative (monoclonal antibodies, small molecules, plasma therapy, etc.) and therapeutic (mRNA, protein-based, viral vector-based, etc.) modalities intended to stop the COVID-19 pandemic. We also go into great detail about the difficulties brought on by various SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOC) found all over the world and how they affect therapeutic and preventative interventions.
