Title: Type 2 Diabetes in the Nicotinamide/Streptozotocin Rat Model: Renal Pathophysiology and Redox Imbalance Features
Abstract: One of the frequent complications of diabetes mellitus is diabetic nephropathy (DN). Although there has been significant progress in our understanding of the pathogenesis of DN, there are currently no effective treatments for this chronic kidney disease. As a result, there is still a need to further understand the underlying biochemical and molecular mechanisms of DN. Animal diabetes models are crucial resources in this regard. This review article highlights a widely used rodent model of type 2 diabetes not caused by obesity and brought on by streptozotocin and nicotinamide (NA) (STZ). In order for the remaining viable cells to continue responding to glucose stimulation, the toxic effect of STZ must be blunted by NA in order for the two chemicals to work together to induce diabetes. Also discussed is the use of this NA-STZ animal model as a testing ground for a variety of renoprotective and anti-diabetic compounds. The NA-STZ model is non-obese and requires less time and money to produce than other type 2 diabetic animal models, such as high-fat diet/STZ models and genetically modified rodent models. This special model should continue to be used in the field of diabetes research because it mimics some pathological characteristics of human DN.
