Title: The use of a two-stage decision model to examine visitor behavior in lodging
Abstract: When using cross-sectional research data to conduct studies on topics that are pertinent to tourism expenditure, zero consumption data are typically observed because tourism products are not necessities for people’s livelihood. A similar issue also exists with regard to tourist accommodation expenditure. Using the dataset from the Survey of Travel by R.O.C. (Taiwan) Citizens for the years 2014–2018, this study uses a two-stage process to examine the factors influencing tourist accommodation decisions in the domestic market. The results show that the social strata, family life cycle, residential area, travel behavior, vacation policy, and economic variables have varying degrees and directions of influence on the intention to use and expenditure on lodging for tourists in the two decision-making equations. As a result, it is inappropriate to use the single-equation analysis using zero consumption expenditure data and to assume that the same variables affect participation and consumption decisions. Instead, this information shows the processes involved in deciding to accommodate and how much to spend on accommodations.
