Description

Title: The quality of life for children on the asthmatic spectrum depends on their mental health.

Abstract: The patient is an active participant in the process of treating their asthma, or at least they should be. This naturally necessitates using a holistic approach to care for patients with bronchial asthma. One element of this model is the evaluation of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Asthma patients’ HRQoL can be assessed using a variety of general tools, such as the Medical Outcomes Survey Short Form 36 (SF-36), the EuroQoL questionnaire (EQ-5D), or the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL), as well as more specialized tools, the most popular of which are the Saint George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRO) and the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ). Significant correlations exist between HRQoL and asthma control levels. The level of health-related quality of life was found to be modulated by three groups of factors: 1) demographic characteristics of patients, 2) clinical parameters, and 3) personality traits of respondents. Nevertheless, literature data suggest that determining HRQoL alone, with either specific or generic instrument, can be insufficient. Because psychological factors have a particularly strong impact on patients with bronchial asthma’s quality of life, measuring depressiveness should be done in addition to determining HRQoL. Additionally, longitudinal complex assessments of the quality of life and its influences ought to be done, either in individual patients or epidemiological studies.
