Title: The outcome of induction therapy in patients with acute leukemia is not related to the need for dental and periodontal treatment after dental clearance: findings from a retrospective pilot study
Abstract: The purpose of this retrospective pilot study was to determine whether adult patients with acute leukemia receiving induction chemotherapy would respond better to initial therapy if they still needed dental/periodontal treatment and if periodontal inflammation persisted after dental clearance. From the patients’ medical records, various factors were evaluated, including initial blood parameters, blood parameters during initial chemotherapy, complaints related to leukemia or therapy, length of fever, microbiological findings (blood and urine), and patient survival. There must be at least one decayed tooth for there to be a need for dental treatment, and there must be at least two sextants with probing depths below 3.5 mm for there to be a need for periodontal treatment. The periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) was used to represent periodontal inflammation. There were 79 patients total. The average PISA score was found to be between 153.18 and 158.09, with dental treatment needs at 75% and periodontal treatment needs at 76%. There were only two correlations found: PISA was associated with erythrocyte count three days after the start of therapy (p 0.01) and periodontal treatment need was associated with thrombocyte count after seven days (p 0.03). Conclusion: The outcome of induction therapy in adult acute leukemia patients does not depend on any unmet dental and periodontal treatment needs as well as periodontal inflammation following dental clearance.
