Title: The Mediating Role of Human Resource Management in the Relationship Between Leadership and Employee Performance
Abstract: Performance-enhancing practices in human resource management (HRM) and effective leadership go hand in hand. There is a wealth of literature on HRM and leadership, but there are still some unanswered questions regarding the set of HR practices that most significantly improve employees’ performance when led properly. This study’s main objective was to examine the relationship between leadership and employee performance in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia’s manufacturing industries, as well as the role of human resource management in mediating that relationship. To accomplish its objective, the study employed a mixed-methods research approach (qualitative and quantitative) and an explanatory and descriptive research design. More specifically, a multi-stage sampling technique was used, which included both simple random and purposeful sampling. Data was gathered from both primary and secondary sources, and analysis was done by AMOS Version 2021 using a structural and measurement model. According to the study’s findings, management of human resources effectively mediates the relationship between leadership and employee performance, which suggests that there is a positive and significant relationship between leadership and employee performance. This study is unique in that it combines the relationship between leadership and employee performance in a single study and takes two distinct directions, adding new findings to the existing literature (direct and indirect). Therefore, by using this finding as a benchmark, industry managers can implement the recommendations to improve employees’ performance through appropriate HRM practices and leadership. Based on the study’s findings, we advise business executives to pay close attention to human resource management metrics like cooperation, engagement, actualization, perception, and teamwork to strengthen the leadership qualities that consciously affect workers’ performance.
