Title: The Impact of Sample Transport Using Pneumatic Tube System on Standard Coagulation and Hematology Tests
Abstract: Background. Automation speeds up turnaround times and increases operational efficiency in laboratories. Transport of specimens between the lab and other areas of the hospital is automated by pneumatic tube systems (PTS). Its impact on coagulation and the complete blood count (CBC) is still debatable. Aim. to compare complete blood count and coagulation parameters during pneumatic tube system sample transport to those during hand delivery. Methods. Between samples sent via pneumatic tube system and samples delivered manually, 75 paired samples for complete blood count and 25 paired samples for coagulation analysis were compared. Results. Red cell indices like MCV and RDW showed a significant decrease in PTS while MCHC showed an increase. WBC and other red cell parameters did not exhibit any statistically significant differences. With PTS samples, a statistically significant rise in platelet count was seen. These variations weren’t clinically significant, though. PTS had no discernible impact on the PT and APTT samples when compared to the hand-delivered samples. Conclusion. RBC parameters like MCV, RDW, and MCHC as well as platelet count experienced statistically significant changes, but these changes were clinically insignificant. So, the PTS at our hospital is safe for the transportation of blood samples for CBC and coagulation assay. However, to guarantee secure delivery and the reliability of the findings, additional research on platelet count is required.
