Title: The Function and Efficacy of Propolis in Human Health and Disease
Abstract: Numerous research studies have focused on the propolis produced by stingless bees (Meliponini tribe) and Apis mellifera honeybees as alternative complementary medicines for the potential treatment of various acute and chronic diseases as a result of technological advancements in the medical and pharmaceutical industries. All over the world, forests in the tropics and subtropics contain propolis. Depending on the bee species, geographic location, botanical source, and environmental factors, propolis’ phytochemical constituent composition varies. Propolis typically includes organic substances, pollen, essential oils, beeswax, lipid, and beeswax. These latter substances include terpenes, terpenoids, coumarins, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, polyphenols, amino acids, and aromatic acids. Numerous organic compounds, including artepillin C, caffeic acid, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, apigenin, chrysin, galangin, kaempferol, luteolin, genistein, naringin, pinocembrin, coumaric acid, and quercetin, are among the biologically active components of propolis. These compounds have a wide range of biological and therapeutic properties, including antican Therefore, the purpose of this review is to give an overview of recent research on the function of propolis, its components, its biologically active compounds, and their effectiveness in the medical and pharmaceutical treatment of chronic diseases.
