Title: The Ethanolic Extract from Berberis vulgaris Roots and Leaves Has Antioxidant, Antibacterial, and Antifungal Properties

Abstract: The antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial properties of the ethanolic extract of barberry leaf and roots were examined in this study. Agar diffusion and microdilution broth production were used to test the antibactericidal activity of root and leaf extracts against pathogenic bacteria to determine the lowest inhibitory concentration (MIC). Staphylococcus aureus ATCC9973, Escherichia coli HB101, Staphylococcus enteritis, and Escherichia coli Cip812 were all inhibited by Berberis vulgaris root and leaf extracts. The extracts’ bactericidal activity against both pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains was evaluated using the disc assay technique. Extract made from hydro-alcoholic liquids was more effective than fungal strains. The outcomes revealed that the antifungal activities of the extract from Berberis vulgaris leaf and roots were comparable. The mycelial growth of Penicillium verrucosum, Fusarium proliferatum, Aspergillus ochraceous, Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus flavus were all inhibited by Berberis vulgaris root extract. The root extract of Berberis vulgaris has powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. In vitro tests for Berberis vulgaris’ antimicrobial activity revealed it to be active against pathogens, and MIC results supported this finding. As a result, Berberis vulgaris roots and leaves can be used as a source of antibacterial, antioxidant, and bioactive compounds to enhance human health. Both have significant antibacterial activity.
