Title: The Effects of Remittances on Vietnamese Savings Behavior and Expenditure Patterns
Abstract: We look at how receiving remittances affects household spending and saving habits in Vietnam. We take into account per capita spending on assets, education, health, assets, home repairs, food, non-food, and utilities, as well as the amount saved, the saving rate, and the share of expenditure. We match data from the 2012 Vietnam Household Living Standard Survey (VHLSS) using propensity score matching. Remittances, according to our research, have a favorable effect on household savings and raise both the total amount saved and the saving rate. Our findings suggest that receiving households spend less on food and more on assets, assets, and home repairs when it comes to spending patterns. According to this finding, households typically use remittances productively, increasing their investments in both physical and human capital. Remittances for the economy as a whole can expand the services offered by banks, financial institutions, hospitals, and healthcare facilities and encourage the production of tangible goods like buildings and assets.
