Title: The Case for Recognizing Fungal Keratitis as a Neglected Tropical Disease
Abstract: Fungal keratitis is a leading cause of treatable blindness in young people. An estimated 1,051,787 to 1,480,916 eyes are affected each year; 8–11% of patients require eye removal. A large number of fungi that are airborne are implicated in the diagnosis, which calls for a corneal scraping, direct microscopy, and fungal culture. The course of treatment entails the frequent use of antifungal eye drops, preferably natamycin, frequently in conjunction with surgery. Blindness (unilateral or bilateral) is frequently seen in low-resource environments due to inappropriate corticosteroid eye drops, ineffective antibacterial therapy, delayed or missed diagnoses, and other factors. There are no current, comprehensive guidelines for diagnosing and treating fungal keratitis. We contend that the inclusion of fungal keratitis as a neglected tropical disease would help to raise awareness of the condition, improve diagnostic tools, and increase access to reasonably priced antifungal eye medications.
