Title: Targeting Clinical Studies from Preclinical Evidence: Chemical Composition and Pharmacological Attributes of the Prosopis Plant
Abstract: Native to America, Africa, and Asia, Prosopis species have long been used in traditional medicine. The Prosopis species most frequently used for medicinal purposes are P. africana, P. alba, P. cineraria, P. farcta, P. glandulosa, P. juliflora, P. nigra, P. ruscifolia, and P. spicigera, which are very effective in treating asthma, calluses, diabetes, diarrhea, expectorant, fever, flu, lactation, liver infection, malaria, o In many parts of the world, food and food supplements have the potential to be made with flour, syrup, and beverages from Prosopis pods. Additionally, numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have uncovered intriguing effects on antiplasmodial, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, antidiabetic, and wound healing. It has become more and more clear that the biological effects observed are correlated with the phytochemical composition of Prosopis plants, specifically their content of C-glycosyl flavones (such as schaftoside, isoschaftoside, vicenin II, vitexin, and isovitexin). Therefore, Prosopis plants have a favorable effect on human diet and general health, according to the literature. In this way, the current review offers a thorough overview of the research on the chemical make-up, pharmacology, and food uses of Prosopis plants, ranging from pre-clinical information to upcoming clinical studies.
