Title: Strategy and goal effects on company performance as mediated by management accounting systems
Abstract: In earlier studies, associations between management accounting systems and organizational success were frequently examined in the literature. However, despite the ability of management accounting tools to act as intermediaries, little has been done to connect business strategies, objectives, and firm performance. The categories of traditional and strategic management accounting themes include management accounting systems. Naturally, various accounting tools are used in accordance with each theme. This article investigates the extent to which the business objectives and strategies of major Thai manufacturing firms affect both their financial and non-financial performance, as mediated by management accounting systems. A survey questionnaire was created to collect the data. A response rate of 13.67% was achieved with 205 of the 1500 companies chosen for inclusion in the survey providing complete and usable responses. In order to examine the relationships between the variables, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used. The results provided some insight into what a company’s management could anticipate in terms of organizational performance from their business strategies, business objectives, and the adoption of particular management accounting systems. The financial and non-financial performance of the large corporations in Thailand was statistically influenced by corporate strategies and corporate goals when mediated by strategic management accounting systems, but not when mediated by traditional management accounting systems. This research contributes to a better understanding of the relationships and effects of the mediators that should have been used to advance business strategies and business goals and produce positive outcomes for organizational performance. Achieving corporate strategies and goals can be aided by selecting the right performance mediators.
