Title: Stem Cells and Rehabilitation Therapies in the Treatment of Ischemic Stroke
Abstract: Stroke treatment using stem cell transplantation combined with physical therapy is effective. Here, we discuss recent developments in stem cell research as well as rehabilitation techniques that, when used in conjunction with one another after a stroke, may produce synergistic results. In fact, stem cell transplantation presents a novel and promising strategy that might complement existing rehabilitation treatments. We hypothesize that a combined therapy will result in better functional outcomes for patients by reviewing the pathophysiology of stroke and the mechanisms by which stem cells and rehabilitation attenuate this inflammatory process. We examine the most common stem cell types, the theories currently held regarding stem cell repair, rehabilitation techniques used inside and outside the brain, and the evidence supporting the advantages of combined therapy using the most recent preclinical data. In this review article, we weigh the benefits and drawbacks of combining rehabilitation and stem cell transplantation to lessen the debilitating effects of stroke.
