Title: Sphaerostephanos unitus (L.) Holttum’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties in vitro
Abstract: Pteridophytes have been extensively utilized in numerous medical systems. Only the antibacterial potential of Sphaerostephanos unitus (L.) Holttum has been evaluated despite numerous reports assessing their bioactive effects. In this sense, the goal of the current study was to identify the phytochemical profile of S. unitus and to assess its toxicity, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory potential. The following assays were used: 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assay (ABTS), in vitro -amylase inhibitory and membrane stabilization assays, brine shrimp lethality, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, phosphomolybdenum assay, superoxide radical scavenging activity, Variable mortality rates were observed for the S. unitus extract toxicity, with LC50 values ranging from 4 to 30 mg/mL. The following are the results of S. unitus extracts’ DPPH radical scavenging actions: Chloroform comes after petroleum ether, methanol, and acetone. The most significant phosphomolybdenum reduction was seen in the S. unitus acetone extract (10 2 mg Ascorbic Acid Equivalent/g). The investigated extracts also demonstrated effective, dose-dependent superoxide scavenging effects. The chloroform extract from S. unitus had the highest ABTS radical scavenging rate (3000 40 mol/g). The S. unitus had the following anti-inflammatory effects: acetone > acetone > acetone > petroleum ether > chloroform. The petroleum ether extract (25 g/mL), which had the highest level of -amylase activity (80%), was used to make the S. unitus extract. In light of these results, more research should be done to isolate and pinpoint the S. unitus compounds that give the plant its anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antioxidant properties.
