Description

Title: Spectral diagnostics and the Excitation Mechanism for Broad UV Emission Lines in Type-1 Active Galaxies

Abstract: This article discusses a number of fundamental UV emission line characteristics, primarily as a function of the ionization parameter, metallicity, and density of the emitting gas, as seen in the spectra of quasars and type 1 active galactic nuclei. The analysis makes use of a general-purpose 4D array of photoionization simulations computed with the CLOUDY program, covering hydrogen density nH 107-1014 cm3, metallicity Z between 0.01 and 100 Z, and column density in the range 1021-1023 cm2. The main focus is on the most notable UV emission lines found in quasar spectra, including NVl1240, SiIVl1397, OIV]l1402, CIVl1549, HeIIl1640, AlIIIl1860, SiIII]l1892, and CIII]l1909, as well as the physical circumstances that electron-ion impact excitation is predicted to occur under most frequently. Spectral diagnostics derived from measurements of emission line ratios are thought to be important for determining the ionization degree, density, and metallicity of the broad line emitting gas, as well as the relative intensity ratios of the doublet or multiplet components important for empirical spectral modeling. Photoionization simulations help constrain the physical interpretation and the domain of applicability of these diagnostics.
