Title: Skin Drug Delivery Using Microemulsions and Nanoemulsions

Abstract: Lipid-based pharmaceutical systems called micro- and nanoemulsions have a high potential to improve drug permeation through skin. Although both microemulsions and nanoemulsions are isotropic dispersions of two immiscible liquids (oil and water), they differ significantly from one another. Microemulsions are o/w emulsions that are thermodynamically stable. Nanoemulsions, on the other hand, are thermodynamically unstable oil/water emulsions with mean droplet sizes of about 1 to 100 nm. The oil phase within them enables  drug delivery is made possible by the solubilization of lipophilic drugs and high encapsulation rates. This review discusses the significance of these systems as well as the major variations in their structure and manufacturing methods. While the cosmetic industry controls the majority of the micro/nanoemulsions on the market to increase the activity of medications used in skincare products, the development of novel pharmaceutical formulations intended for the topical, dermal and the administration of therapeutic drugs transdermally is a possibility. Topical delivery, in particular for the treatment of cutaneous diseases, should be the preferred route in order to reduce the number of drugs used and potential side-effects while directing the drugs to the site of action. The delivery of poorly water-soluble molecules through the skin has demonstrated some advantages over the oral route because drugs escape from first-pass metabolism. Therefore, many synthetic and natural compounds have been developed using these delivery systems, with the goal of improving drug delivery through lipophilic barriers. Nanoemulsions and microemulsions represent versatile options for this. bioactivity, delivery, and stability. Regarding the potential of these delivery systems to increase the skin permeability of medications with anti-inflammatory, sun-protective, anticarcinogenic, and/or wound-healing activities, detailed information is provided regarding the most pertinent recent scientific publications. Additionally, the most popular skincare items that use emulsion-based systems are shown and discussed.
