Title: Road Dust Dissolved, Nanoparticulate, and Microparticulate Fractions Platinum and Palladium Distribution
Abstract: Road dust serves as the primary sink for Pt and Pd that are released into the environment as a result of the aging processes of vehicle catalytic converters. Despite the fact that Pt and Pd are present in catalytic converters as metallic nanoparticles, they can change into toxic dissolved species when exposed to certain environmental factors. The distribution of Pt and Pd in the dissolved, nanoparticulate, and microparticulate fractions of Moscow road dust is evaluated in the current work. The ranges of the total Pt and Pd concentrations in dust are 9–142 ng (mean 35) and 155–456 ng (mean 235), respectively. Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to investigate the nanoparticulate and dissolved species of Pt and Pd in dust. Pt and Pd nanoparticles had median sizes of 7 and 13 nm, respectively. Only 1.6–1.8% of the Pt and Pd in the dust in Moscow are nanoparticulates. Pt and Pd have average dissolved fraction contents of 10.4% and 4.1%, respectively. Road dust contains significant amounts of Pt and Pd (88–94%) that are linked to microparticles. Even though Pt and Pd’s microparticulate fractions are generally stable, they could dissolve in a changing environment and change into toxic species.
