Title: Review of the effectiveness of vermicompost and its derivatives against phytopathogenic fungi in soil
Abstract: Fertilizers and pesticides made of synthetic chemicals are widely used in agriculture to improve soil fertility and ward off disease, respectively. Numerous studies have found that these chemicals have a detrimental effect on the soil environment. Better alternatives might include natural sources derived from earthworms and their byproducts as a result of vermicomposting. In order to highlight their use in agriculture, the goal of this review was to identify the source of the antifungal effectiveness of vermicompost and its derivatives, including vermiwash, coelomic fluid, earthworm skin secretions, and metabolites from decomposer bacteria in vermicompost. Crop plants were helped to effectively combat a variety of soil pathogenic fungi, including Rhizoctonia solani, Alternaria solani, Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, Fusarium oxysporum, and Fusarium graminearum, thanks to the synergistic activity of bioactive compounds present in coelomic fluid, mucus, skin secretion, and metabolites from associated bacteria (decomposer). Therefore, it is suggested to use these bioactive metabolites to prevent plant fungal diseases. To reduce harmful soil fungi and boost crop productivity, vermicompost and its derivatives ought to be taken into consideration for use in agricultural fields.
