Title: Review of the data supporting bronchoscopic lung volume reduction
Abstract: Emphysema causes dyspnea that is resistant to conventional medical treatment due to the loss of gas-exchanging surface and an abnormal shape of the diaphragm. Patients with severe emphysema whose symptoms are uncontrolled on standard therapy may benefit surgically from lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS). Bronchoscopic LVR (bLVR) is a minimally invasive procedure that involves inserting valves, coils, sealants, or using methods similar to thermal vapour ablation under bronchoscopy guidance. These treatments have evolved over the past few years and produce varying patient outcomes. In this review, we have provided a summary of the most recent data on each of these techniques.
