Title: Review of Microbiological Products and Potential Use as Antimicrobial Agents
Abstract: Actinomycetes, archaea, bacteria, fungi, yeast, and microalgae are just a few of the beneficial microorganisms that are a rich source of essential bioactive substances. The current literature on antimicrobial molecules produced by microorganisms is compiled in this review. Actinomycetes, particularly Streptomyces spp., archaea, fungi including endophytic, filamentous, and marine-derived fungi, mushroom, and microalgae are all briefly described for their potential antimicrobial compounds. Additionally, a brief summary of the bacteriocins, halocins, sulfolobicin, and other drugs that target pathogens that are multi-drug resistant and takes into account next-generation antibiotics. The use of microorganisms as an antimicrobial resource for biotechnological, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical applications is highlighted in this review. To isolate, separate, purify, and characterize these bioactive compounds and transform these primary medicines into clinically accepted antibiotics, more research is necessary.
