Description

Title: Review of Environmental DNA Based Methods for Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation

Abstract: Modern conservation biology has been illuminated by recently developed non-invasive environmental DNA-based (eDNA) techniques, which have propelled the monitoring/management of natural populations to a more effective and efficient approach, compared to traditional surveys. However, given the quick growth of eDNA, terminology ambiguity and inconsistent collection/analytical pipelines pose a risk to the advancement of research, methodological standardization, and practitioner uptake in a number of ways. The current investigation highlights successful case studies in conservation management as well as the evolution of eDNA (sensu stricto). With high accuracy and authentication, the eDNA technique is successfully applicable in several areas of conservation research (invasive/conserve species detection), gradually modernizing conservation methods. Research is progressing thanks to the eDNA technique, related bioinformatics (like taxon-specific primers MiFish and MiBird, etc.), sample-dependent methodology, and improvements in sequencing technology (like Oxford Nanopore Sequencing). The study demonstrates the wide range of applications for the eDNA technique, including I early detection of invasive species, (ii) species detection for conservation, (iii) community level biodiversity monitoring, (iv) ecosystem health monitoring, (v) trophic interactions research, etc. Therefore, the highly accurate and authenticated eDNA technique can be used both independently and in conjunction with conventional surveys in conservation biology. For future management choices, a comprehensive eDNA-based monitoring program (ecosystem modeling and function) is necessary on a global level.
