Title: Review of Current Implant Design and Results for Cervical and Lumbar Disc Arthroplasty
Abstract: While motion-preserving disc arthroplasties have recently gained popularity, traditional fusion-based treatments for spinal disc pathology remain the standard of care. Traditional spinal fusion has been linked to motion loss, changes in the kinematics of the native spine, and an increased risk of disease in adjacent segments. These complications are thought to be avoided by the motion that a disc arthroplasty provides. Early implant designs led to poor patient outcomes, but more recent developments in implant design Compared to conventional fusion, science and technology have produced promising radiographic and clinical results. The use of disc arthroplasty has increased quickly as a result of these findings, with rates of cervical arthroplasty nearly tripling over the course of seven years. This review’s discussion of implant design evolution, popular implant designs today, and related outcomes was done so for informational purposes. Although disc arthroplasty has a great deal of potential to address some of the problems with fusion, it is not without risk. Disc arthroplasty has been linked to osteolysis, implant migration, and the emergence of heterotopic ossification. As interest in these procedures increases, so does interest in creating better implant designs that will lessen these undesirable outcomes. Cervical and lumbar disc arthroplasty are likely to establish themselves as the main methods for treating disc pathology even though they are still relatively new.
