Description
Title: Pyrrolnitrin, a Natural Metabolite from Microorganisms, Has a Wide Range of Applications
Abstract: A pyrrole halometabolite produced by microorganisms called pyrrolnitrin (PRN) has significant antimicrobial implications for agriculture, medicine, and industry. The substance has been isolated from Serratia, Burkholderia, and non-fluorescent or fluorescent rhizospheric pseudomonads. They provide strong plant protection prospects against soil- and seed-borne phytopathogenic diseases because they are known to confer biological control against a variety of phytopathogenic fungi. Even though different methods have been used to produce PRN chemically, microbial production is still the most practical method for producing this metabolite. The production of PRN is reliant on the quorum-sensing regulation, which typically involves N-acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) autoinducer signals, in many of the plant-associated isolates of Serratia and Burkholderia. The molecule hinders the production of important biomolecules (DNA, RNA, and protein), decouples from oxidative phosphorylation, prevents mitotic division, and interferes with a number of biological processes when used as an antimicrobial agent on organisms. The metabolite has become a lead molecule of industrial importance due to its potential broad-spectrum activities, low phototoxicity, non-toxic nature, and specificity for effects on non-target organisms. As a result, methods for the cost-effective biosynthesis of PRN using microbial fermentation have been developed. In order to provide a condensed, sequential, and updated understanding of the chemistry, biology, and applicability of this natural molecule, a substantial body of work narrating focused research efforts in the emergence of this potential microbial metabolite is summarized here.
