Title: Potential of Renewable Energy and Sustainable Tourism: A Local Development Plan for the La Florida Community in Huaral, Peru
Abstract: Although tourism generates 5% of all anthropogenic CO2 and accounts for 10% of the world’s GDP, it also indirectly accounts for 50% to 60% of all carbon emissions. Rural areas in developing nations experience high levels of poverty, so sustainable tourism based on renewable energy is the best way to promote local development. In order to propose an eco-friendly business alternative, our goals are to assess the impact of sustainable tourism on local development in the community of La Florida, Huaral, Peru, as well as to assess the potential of renewable energy (solar and wind power). 265 locals participated in a survey using a non-experimental, quantitative method to provide their opinions on the proposal. Additionally, the potential for solar and wind energy was assessed to find sustainable substitutes that locals might implement into local endeavors. The findings show a connection between sustainable tourism and local development, as tourism activity gives locals the chance to improve their quality of life and start new businesses. The assessment of the potential for renewable energy in this region also supports its viability.
