Title: Possibility of Reversing Skin Aging with Hibiscus sabdariffa L. and Hibiscus Acid
Abstract: Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (HS) has been used both as food and medicine for a very long time. In this study, the biological activities of the HS-derived hibiscus acid, chromatographic fractions, and extracts were assessed for potential bioactivities. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to gauge their capacity to encourage the synthesis of extracellular matrix in skin fibroblasts. An experiment using nitric oxide (NO)-Griess inflammation was used to assess their anti-inflammatory activity. A strong anti-oxidative stress effect of hibiscus acid was also discovered through the development of an oxidative stress model induced by hydrogen peroxide. Numerous tests revealed that hibiscus acid treatment can efficiently lower the production of carbonyl proteins and extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP), while also maintaining high levels of reduced/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) in skin cells. This suggests a potential mechanism by which hibiscus acid can combat antioxidative stress. The potential to reverse skin aging and the contributing factor of HS are being investigated for the first time in the current study.
