Abstract: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), manifests as a variety of symptoms, ranging from asymptomatic to severe illness and even death. Aging and a wide range of underlying diseases like diabetes, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cancer are among the risk factors that are linked to infection severity. It is still unclear how these circumstances affect COVID-19 severity. Higher morbidity and mortality rates in COVID-19 are linked to the expansion of CD28null senescent T-cell populations, a common phenomenon in aging and a number of chronic inflammatory conditions. The potential mechanisms by which CD28null cells cause disease and predispose patients to the deadly COVID-19 are outlined here. We also go over potential treatments for people with high levels of CD28null senescent T-cells.
