Title: Plant Group II LEA Proteins: Multiple Functions in Response to Environmental Stresses Despite Intrinsically Disordered Structure

Abstract: Plants have developed a variety of defense mechanisms in response to environmental stresses, which has led to the overexpression of a number of stress-responsive genes. A particular group of these genes produces intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), which repair and shield plants from harm brought on by environmental stresses. The most prevalent and well-studied group of IDPs is Group II LEA (late embryogenesis abundant) proteins; they accumulate in the final stages of seed development and are expressed in response to low humidity, salinity, and Temperature or ABA treatment are two options. Because group II LEA proteins play critical roles in preserving the integrity of biomolecules by preventing the crystallization of cellular components prior to multiple stresses, physiological and biochemical characterization of these proteins has been done in a number of studies. This review discusses the genomic diversity, structural organization, and distribution of group II LEA proteins, as well as some recent studies on their regulation and expression of molecules under various abiotic stresses. Also presented are novel features of group II LEA proteins found in orthodox seeds and Phoenix dactylifera. Group II LEA genes were found to be widely distributed and expressed in various plant cells, according to genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Biochemical assays conducted in vitro have provided evidence that group II LEA proteins respond to extreme stresses by performing a variety of functions. Numerous studies have shown that group II LEA proteins are involved in the plant stress tolerance mechanism, highlighting the molecular features of group II LEA genes and their potential contribution to biotechnological methods to improve plant survival in challenging conditions.
