Description

Title: Peer-to-Peer Lending’s Rapid Development and the Effects It Has on the Consumer Credit Market: Evidence from Lithuania

Abstract: The study examines the evolution and factors driving the rapid expansion of peer-to-peer (P2P) lending in Lithuania as well as the effect it has had on the consumer credit market, with a particular emphasis on issues of sustainability. Legislative differences between the banking and P2P sectors are examined, and their significance in foretelling the various development trends within the sectors is highlighted. The research is divided into several steps, each of which analyzes a specific issue with the aim of comparing the processes in both segments. These steps use two distinct approaches based on an analysis of the macroeconomic data and the legislative environment. The research’s practical design makes it possible to identify and quantify the effects of various internal and external factors, such as macroeconomics, the technological advantages of P2P platforms, and differences in business regulation, on the various market segments. By providing quantitative proof of the impact the examined internal and external drivers have on the growth rate of the consumer credit market segments in Lithuania and how this could affect the performance of the entire market, including its sustainability, the obtained results could close gaps in the scientific literature. Researchers and practitioners in other nations, particularly those with consumer credit markets with similar laws and regulations, may find the conclusions reached to be of interest. The following techniques were employed: a generalization and analysis of scientific literature, comparative analysis, statistical data analysis, correlation-regression analysis, and mathematical modeling.
