Description
Title: Patients with sickle cell anemia in Ilorin, North Central Nigeria, and their iron status
Abstract: Objectives. A common genetic disorder in the world is sickle cell anemia (SCA). It is characterized by chronic systemic organ damage, anemia, and sporadic thrombotic pain attacks. Recent research suggests that people with SCA, particularly those from developing nations, are more likely to be iron deficient than iron overloaded. In Ilorin, Nigeria, the study’s goal is to ascertain the iron status of SCA patients. Methods. 45 SCA patients in steady state and 45 controls without SCA were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. All subjects had their FBC, blood film, sFC, sTfR, and sTfR/log sFC index measurements made. Results. The difference between the mean serum ferritin of the patients (589.33 427.61 ng/mL) and the mean ferritin of the controls (184.53 119.74 ng/mL) was significant. In comparison to the controls (3.96 0.17 g/L), the patients’ mean serum transferrin receptor was higher (4.24 0.17 g/mL) (p = 0.290). In comparison to the control group, the patients’ mean serum transferrin receptor (sTfR)/log serum ferritin index (1.65 0.27 g/mL) was significantly lower (p = 0.031). Conclusion. Since iron deficiency is uncommon in SCA patients, it is advisable to periodically check their haematological, biochemical, and clinical characteristics to determine their iron status.
