Title: Patients with Myelodysplastic Syndromes have Regulatory T Cells and a profile of FOXP3 isoform expression in their peripheral blood.
Abstract: In peripheral blood from patients with myelodysplastic syndromes, we looked at the frequency of regulatory T cells and the degree of FOXP3 isoform expression. We discovered a significant decrease in regulatory T cells at every stage of the disease. At the same time, we noticed a shift in the expression profile of FOXP3 isoforms towards the full-length molecule in untreated patients, which may have been brought on by inflammation. We have also hypothesized that our discovery may help to explain the high risk of autoimmune disorders in this disease, based on the knowledge about the possibly higher functional activity of FOXP3 molecules lacking exon 2.
