Description
Title: Patients with abnormal hematological parameters at Jimma Medical Center in southwest Ethiopia were found to have a high prevalence of leukemia and other risk factors for the disease.
Abstract: Introduction. Leukemia is a diverse group of hematological disorders that includes several subgroups that are biologically distinct from one another. Worldwide, leukemia ranks as the 10th and 11th most common cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality, respectively. Particularly in the study area, Ethiopia lacks adequate data on the prevalence of leukemia. This study aims to identify the prevalence of leukemia and related factors among Jimma Medical Center patients who have abnormal hematological parameters. Methodology. In a facility-based cross-sectional study, 332 patients with abnormal hematological parameters participated. Using a Sysmex autohematology analyzer, a complete blood count was performed on venous blood (Sysmex XS-500i and XT-1800; Kobe, Japan). Each patient underwent a bone marrow aspirate examination as well as peripheral blood morphology testing. Using IBM SPSS version 25, descriptive statistics for the prevalence of leukemia and multinomial logistic regression analysis to evaluate contributing factors were conducted. Results. 9.3% of people had leukemia, while 3.6%, 2.7%, 1.8%, 0.6%, and 0.3% of people had acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoid leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, chronic lymphoid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, and undifferentiated leukemia, respectively. Acute myeloid leukemia was significantly associated with older age (p 0.019), being male (p 0.047), being anemic (p 0.03), and rural residency of a patient (p 0.044). Conclusion. The Jimma Medical Center has a high prevalence of leukemia among patients with abnormal hematological parameters, necessitating additional thorough investigations of the risk factors and predictors using more advanced diagnostic techniques.
