Title: Parkinson’s Disease Treatment Options for Motor and Non-Motor Symptoms
Abstract: Parkinson’s disease (PD) typically affects older adults and is characterized by dysfunctions of the motor and non-motor systems. Loss of dopaminergic neuronal cells in the substantia nigra pars compacta region of the midbrain causes PD, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. The five treatment options for people with Parkinson’s (PwP) are highlighted here as part of an integrative medicine and health strategy: rehabilitation, therapy, restorative care, maintenance, and surgery. Rehabilitating begins after a diagnosis and continues throughout any additional stages of care, particularly when speaking with a physical, occupational, or speech therapist (s). Levodopa (with carbidopa), a dopamine agonist, compounds that preserve residual dopamine, and other specific motor/non-motor-related drugs are administered daily as part of therapy. Exercise regimens that are physically demanding and aerobic are used in restorative practices. In order to maintain the brain microenvironment, substances from complementary and alternative medicine are used. Finally, when PwP do not benefit from other treatment options, surgery is considered, including deep brain stimulation. PD currently has no known treatment. The best course of action for treating PD is to try to stop the disorder’s progression and work toward stability with neuroprotection. Any management program’s ultimate objective is to raise the quality of life for a Parkinson’s patient.
