Title: Neurocognitive and Psychosocial Results in Children With Brain Tumors
Abstract: Pediatric brain tumor (PBT) treatment’s late neurocognitive and psychosocial effects are a significant area of clinical focus and ongoing research. neurological aftereffects, and PBT survivors’ overall health-related quality of life, educational attainment, and employment rates are all negatively impacted by associated learning and socioemotional development issues. The neurocognitive and psychosocial outcomes in PBT survivors are influenced by a number of variables, including tumor characteristics and associated complications, treatment approaches, individual protective and vulnerability factors, and accessibility of environmental supports. Overall measured intelligence declines are frequent and may continue for years after treatment. It is hypothesized that issues with overall intellectual development, academic success, and career attainment are caused by core deficits in attention, processing speed, and working memory. Depression, anxiety, and difficulties with psychosocial adjustment are additional psychological issues that may arise after PBT. Although research on novel, focused, and efficient interventions for neurocognitive late effects is still in its early stages, several intervention paradigms are briefly described. In addition to reviewing the current literature on PBT late effects, this article also emphasizes the need for novel studies to improve neurocognitive and psychosocial outcomes in PBT survivors.
