Title: Multidrug-Resistant Candida albicans and Ampicillin-Resistant Escherichia coli Polymicrobial Biofilm Dynamics and Antimicrobial Inhibition by Aqueous Garlic Extract
Abstract: The C. albicans and E. coli polymicrobial biofilm displays a dynamic interspecies interaction and is resistant to traditional antimicrobials. In this study, C. albicans that forms thick biofilms and is multidrug resistant outperforms E. coli in a 24-hour coculture. Biochemical and structural characterization showed that these individual biofilms of ampicillin-resistant Escherichia coli ATCC 39936 and multidrug-resistant C. albicans M-207 as well as their polymicrobial biofilm were prevented after treatment with whole aqueous garlic extract (AGE). The antimicrobial potential of AGE is enhanced in this study to inhibit drug-resistant C. albicans and bacterial-associated polymicrobial biofilms, suggesting the possibility of efficient combinatorial and synergistic antimicrobial designs with negligible side effects.
