Title: More Than Just an Antioxidant, Pyrroloquinoline-Quinone Is a Vitamin-Like Accessory Factor Vital for Health and Disease Prevention
Abstract: In biological processes like mitochondriogenesis, reproduction, growth, and aging, pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is involved. PQQ also lessens clinically relevant dysfunctions (e.g., those associated with ischemia, inflammation and lipotoxicity). PQQ is a novel biofactor among those that aren’t recognized as vitamins or conditional vitamins at the moment. For instance, a response similar to a vitamin-related deficiency is produced when PQQ is absent from diets, and this response recovers in a dose-dependent manner upon PQQ replacement. Additionally, PQQ supplementation is linked to potential health advantages like increased metabolic flexibility and immuno- and neuroprotection. Here, we discuss PQQ’s function as an accessory factor or enzymatic cofactor and highlight the mechanisms that underlie PQQ’s actions. We examine numerous studies showing that a neonatal or perinatal PQQ deficiency lowers the amount of mitochondria and the expression of genes related to mitochondria. Review of the available data suggests that PQQ regulates lactate acid and possibly other dehydrogenases, which together with sirtuin targets like PGC-1, NRF-1, NRF-2, and TFAM enhance NAD+-dependent sirtuin activity, mediating mitochondrial functions. All things considered, the evidence at hand suggests that PQQ, which resembles a vitamin, has great potential as a potent therapeutic nutraceutical.
