Description

Title: Monitoring of Fauna, Flora, and Fungi is Increasingly Important for Measuring the Impact of Conservation

Abstract: Many stakeholders, including governments, businesses, and civil society, lack the information necessary to decide on biodiversity in an informed manner, endangering efforts to conserve, restore, and manage nature sustainably. In this article, we go over the significance of improving biodiversity monitoring, evaluate the difficulties involved, and pinpoint potential solutions. It is urgently necessary to increase capacity for biodiversity monitoring, particularly in poorer, biodiverse nations where data gaps are disproportionately large. In order to fill in taxonomic and geographic data gaps, particularly in the tropics, in marine and freshwater biomes, and for plants, fungi, and invertebrates, modern tools and technologies, such as remote sensing, bioacoustics, and environmental DNA, should be used at larger scales. Stakeholders must use best monitoring practices, adopt appropriate indicators, and measure and attribute outcomes and impacts using counterfactual approaches. Data should be made publicly and unrestrictedly accessible. Businesses must spend money gathering the information needed to improve the sustainability of their operations and supply chains. It is the right time to make a concerted effort to promote monitoring because governments will soon commit to the global biodiversity framework for the years after 2020. To improve results-based management sufficiently and preserve the biodiversity and ecosystem services on which we all rely, however, large-scale action is required right away.
