Title: L2 Writing: Process and Product in Test and Non-Test Situations
Abstract: Sometimes, the people who write the tests are disappointed by how little time they have to do their finest work. As a consequence of this, we compared the methodology and outcomes of the texts that were produced in test settings to those that were produced in situations that were not tests. Ten postdoctoral students who were taking L2 classes each produced two argumentative essays: one was for an exam in which they were given just forty minutes and no access to resources, and the other was for an assignment in which they were given an unlimited amount of time and access to the Internet. The participants were asked to provide a description of their writing processes as well as comments on those processes. In order to record the comments made by the participants, we employed keystroke recording, software that captures the screen, and various tactics that activate the memory. The following table details each of the sixteen distinct categories of the writing process. The non-test condition saw much more instances of substantial modification and assessment, whereas the test set saw significantly more instances of superficial revision and translation. The amount of time allotted for various treatments varied dramatically between time periods in a statistically meaningful way. The average grade that experienced educators bestowed upon the non-test materials was approximately one point (0.8) higher. According to research that examined the correlation between the writing process and product quality, the distribution of writing processes may have an effect on the quality of the text in the test environment, but it had no effect on the finished output in the non-test environment. This was discovered through correlational research that examined the link between the writing process and product quality
