Title: Joint Experimental and Theoretical Study on Simultaneous Electron and Photon Excitation of Helium
Abstract: The differential cross-sections caused by the inelastic scattering of a monoenergetic electron by helium atoms in the presence of a powerful carbon dioxide laser are the subject of a joint experimental and theoretical study that we present here. For the first three microseconds of the laser pulse, we specifically measured the signals of the scattered electrons during the simultaneous electron-photon excitation of the He 21P state. The signals revealed a structure that emerged at small scattering angles when measured for an incident electron energy of 45 eV. The latter was discovered to be sensitive to both the type of transferred photons and the laser field’s intensity. Quantum calculations using the second-order Born approximation and accounting for correlated electron-electron interactions supported the experimental results.
